On Friday 13th February, the Eden Cinemas held the Fifty Shades of Grey Movie Premiere. Being one of the most anticipated films of the year, there was no doubt that the film would be a huge success at the box office. However, with tickets for the premiere selling out in just a few days, expectations were definitely exceeded. After just one week, the movie surpassed that budgeted for its whole duration. Also, ten days after its release, Fifty Shades of Grey outperformed all films shown at the Eden Cinemas in 2014, including Maleficent and The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies. The movie is also the best performing so far for 2015.
When E. L. James’ erotic novels were first published back in 2011, many felt awkward when admitting to having read the books. However, this definitely does not seem to be the case with the movie as theatres have been packed each night since its release. This was somewhat of a surprise considering the mixed movie reviews, and also the fact that attendance in the US dropped by 70% in its second week. With just about everyone in Malta purchasing tickets for Fifty Shades of Grey, including men, the movie is likely to have a relatively long run at the Eden Cinemas.
