Break the silence – Say NO to domestic violence.
On Tuesday 1st December, 89.7 Bay announced the launch of the #walkaway campaign. #walkaway is an initiative to create awareness and understanding about domestic violence, as well as to help enable sufferers to break the silence. Between 2009 and 2013, a total of 4102 people reported being victims of domestic violence in local police stations around the island. With 1118 reports made in 2012 alone, it is clear that aid and awareness in Malta is very much needed.
This campaign has the support and backing of The Ministry for the Family and Social Solidarity and The Ministry for Social Dialogue, Consumer Affairs and Civil Liberties. It has been organised with the help of Aġenzija Appoġġ, the National Agency dedicated to safeguarding and promoting the well-being of children, families and the Maltese community at large; as well as the Commission on Domestic Violence who were consulted throughout in preparation of this campaign. The #walkaway campaign aims to assist Appoġġ and the Commission in their exceptional work, and create awareness about how to handle domestic violence. The #walkaway campaign will focus primarily on encouraging people to speak up and stand up against domestic violence as a united community, to put a stop to all abuse. Whether you know someone who is being abused, you were once abused or you have found yourself abusing others, support and help is available for all.
As part of this campaign, an informational website has been set up: www.walkaway.com.mt. The website breaks down every type of abuse that can take place, acting as a guide for support. More importantly, the website gives advice on how to handle domestic violence and encourages people to join the #walkaway campaign, to put an end to all types of abuse.
